I’ll admit this right now…I don’t eat seasoned frozen vegetables because I am horrified every time I look at the ingredient list. Ingredients like maltodextrin, soybean oil, xanthan gum, and natural flavor (what exactly is that??), not to mention that sugar is almost always included. So when I was offered a try an assortment of various frozen veggies from Tommy’s Superfoods, I had to do some research first on their products before saying “yes”. The information I found was absolutely shocking…their products are all natural, non-GMO project verified, certified vegan and gluten free! Whaat?!?! Best news ever and that’s exactly how vegetables should be, frozen or not. The veggie bags are kept frozen until ready to use and can be prepared by sautéing in a pan, roasting in the oven, or steam right in the bag in the microwave. For this review, I tried all three methods.
Asparagus with Uncured Bacon: This was a great mixture of asparagus, carrots, onions, red bell peppers, and bacon (love that the bacon is uncured too!). I decided to sauté it in a pan on the stove top, sprinkled with a little extra fresh lemon juice at the end, and it was delicious served with grilled blackened shrimp. Fantastic and very surprised the asparagus didn’t turn out mushy. Definitely a keeper.
Root Fusion: Loved this mix of sweet potatoes, carrots, Fuji apples, and beets. This is totally something I would make at home so it’s my jam. I used the steam-in-the-bag microwave method for this one. It was super easy and all I did was pop the bag in the microwave and turn it on. It tasted great but thinking the root veggies would be much better roasted. They need that kind of texture that a starch can only get from roasting. Doing it that way next time for sure!
Natural Greens with Uncured Bacon: Another veggie cooked with uncured bacon. YAY BACON AGAIN!! This bag is a mixture of finely chopped kale and collard greens with garlic and, of course, bacon. I figured this bag would do better cooking via microwave so the greens could stay moist and tender. The flavor was great but I felt like the greens had too many tough stems. Because of that I might leave this one on the grocery freezer shelf. I mean, it’s awesome to have a bag of naturally seasoned greens in the freezer to cook at any time and the bacon/garlic flavor is over the top yummy but it’s hard for me to get past the stems.
Organic Sweet Potatoes: Lesson learned with the Root Fusion bag so I roasted these potatoes and they were excellent! Just good old seasoned sweet potatoes. Perfect to have several bags of these in the freezer for a quick side dish and especially for when you don’t feel like doing all the prep to make your own.
Brussels Sprouts: I’m one of those really weird people who actually like brussels sprouts…a lot. I can eat roasted brussels sprouts every (other) day. And they go with everything: beef, lamb, seafood, chicken, pork. What’s not to love? So I was psyched to see this bag and couldn’t wait to try them. Of course I roasted them and the flavors of the sprouts with red bell peppers and mushrooms mingled well together. Plus, this was seasoned with Tommy’s BBQ seasoning and included roasted garlic. So delish!
Cauliflower and Green Beans: Here’s the truth, I’m not lover of frozen green beans. You can tell me all day long that frozen ones are fine and a more than adequate substitute for fresh, but I won’t listen. I believe there’s no use in eating green beans unless they are fresh. Period. I also prefer my cauliflower to be fresh so, needless to say, I tried this bag last and I wasn’t excited about it at all. Okay, except for the fact that chili pepper is used in the seasoning mix so that made me pretty darn happy. I nuked this baby and, amazingly, it was really good. Both the cauliflower and the french cut green beans stayed tender crisp and weren’t soggy in the least bit. And it was SPICY!!!! I was going to put more hot red pepper flakes on it but honesty it didn’t need it. Me likely. This one little bag has changed my mind about frozen cauliflower and green beans forever 😉
